Last Tuesday The Klaxons picked up the mercury prize. unlike other awards, the mercury prize is awarded to the most interesting musician/s of the moment, and not for how much records they've actually sold.
really good shortlist this year (last year winners were the arctic monkeys), worth checking are Rob da bank favourites 'Bat for Lashes', indie electronics 'Maps' and off course the ruff rugged and raw Amy Winehouse, which had the best odds for winning the prize. but instead of giving it to a well deserved Winehouse, the winners were Nu-rave extravaganza the Klaxons(hate that definition, but after all the NME did made up a genre name to honor the young wide-pupiled folks)
now ever since Tuesday i keep hearing people complaining about how shit the Klaxons are and that they definitely didn't deserve to win the award. well, i have to disagree. i think that they're debut album 'myths of the near future' is brilliant. (and i'm a very big winehouse fan from day one.) and it's definitely one of my favourites for 2006/7, i think their music is intelligent and succeeds in bringing some obscure concepts to pop starved teens all over the world. the lyrics are spiced up with black magic stuff and philosophical shit, and the music simply makes you feel good, even without popping 12 peels at 10 am (in a grand klaxonian style)
I've put up the video for Magick, not the best song on the album but the video is simply blinding, with flouro liquids pouring from every hole in their body.
now to Amy, who didn't win the prize but gave out one of the most touching performaces i've seen lately. especially concerning what the poor lady been through in the past couple of months here in the video she performs 'Love is a Losing Game', really made my eyes moist, what a voice.
